How can so many people outgrow their data centers?

December 17th, 2005 · 2 Comments

This post on slashdot is comical to me. How can so many large (and well funded) companies need to move data centers? This smells like either: (a) An excuse for hardware problems, or (b) Their app is so horribly unscalable, they need a bazillion servers to handle the load. Unfortunately, it’s all too common for (b) to be true.

Unless they were hosting their servers in their closet (unlikely), I can’t imagine needing more space than any of the normal data center provides (i.e. their current one) could provide. I just can’t fathom “outgrowing” a data center. Pretty much all of the standard data centers out there have fat (read OC-3 or OC-12) pipes coming in, with the ability to get more quickly, as well as plenty of space. Disclaimer: I know PAIX has severe power shortages in some of it’s facilities, so perhaps that is what they have outgrown..

Anyways, just another example of needing to plan at the BEGINNING for all levels of growth you could possibly obtain, and then you won’t have to post silly messages on your status page saying you are “moving” facilities.

[...] I spoke about “How can see many people outgrow their data centers” before, this is really a follow up to that entry. The gist of it is that there is a LOT of electricity being wasted by half-ass solutions. This wasted electricity in turn releases carbon in the atmosphere, which causes global warming (this is of course a very watered down scientific analysis of global warming, but I am simple man that thinks in simple terms).
